Lady Aurora is determined to make a new life for herself after surviving five years of abuse at the hand of her late husband but the discovery of his ring on the body of a dead man at the hotel where her journey starts will derail her best plans.

Unfortunately for her, Inspector Edwards of Scotland Yard is tasked with this investigation. Knowing that he previously accused her and her friend, the Viscount Beaulieu of her husband’s murder, they once again become the target of his suspicion.

Distracted by the discovery of a mysterious notebook and a chance encounter with the charismatic cartographer, the Earl of Sommerset and his cousin, Pauline, Lady Aurora quickly realizes that the two have their own reasons to benefit from the death at the hotel.

As she struggles to know who to trust, Beaulieu and Pauline disappear leaving her fledging relationship with the earl in tatters. When an old nemesis with ties to her late husband threatens all including her own sanity, she will have to make a difficult choice between what is expected of her and what she has to do to save her friends and clear her name.
